Recently the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines have received Health Canada approval bringing the total of vaccines available in Canada to four. Although some have received higher efficacy results in trials, experts all agree that all 4 vaccines are safe and will provide similar prevention to hospitalization and death. While some may prefer one or another vaccine it’s clear that all will prevent you from getting seriously ill or dying.  Canada’s  Chief  Public  Health  officer  Dr. Teresa Tam is telling everyone to get the first vaccine that is available to you. Only when people are vaccinated can we  achieve  herd immunity. Deciding which vaccine,  you prefer wastes time and allows the virus variants to take hold and possibly reducing vaccine effectiveness.

Recently countries in Europe suspended the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine over reports that some people had developed blood clots.

However, after a clinical review by the World Health Organization (WHO) and a recent study in the United States, there is no evidence to suggests that blood clots can occur, in fact in the US they found that the Oxford-Astra Zeneca vaccine was even more effective that the original clinical trials.

Vaccine roll outs increasing in Canada

With the news of 4 Vaccines available in Canada each province has begun roll out plans. Most provinces have already vaccinated health-care workers and the residents of long-term care facilities. The next phase is age related with older people (80 and over) getting vaccinated first then decreasing by 5-year intervals (75 and over then 70 and over etc.).  In Ontario, a pilot roll-out has also begun in Toronto, Windsor and Kingston which allows pharmacies to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to people 60 and over. This has greatly reduced the timeline of all Ontarians to be vaccinated, in fact it is now estimated that  everyone in Ontario will receive at least 1 vaccination by June 20th .

Ontario is Canada’s largest province with over 14 million people and with the expedited vaccination program, many expect the summer could return to some level of normalcy.

The race now is to keep cases down and prevent a third wave, provinces across Canada have had various forms of lockdowns to keep cases in check.

When will schools be back to “Normal”?

With some form of herd immunity projected for early summer most School Boards are anticipating a return to in- class learning for September. Many School districts have made investments in safety equipment and have improved school ventilation systems. Even with mechanical upgrades ready, many schools will likely still have some safety measures in place. Over the summer decisions about class size, cohorts and other safety measures will be discussed and more information will follow. In Ontario PPM 164 (guidelines to remote on-line learning) will likely still be in place but most educators believe that it may be amended to favour in-class learning over remote learning.

The TCDSB is eager to welcome back International students and through the Orientation Centre assessments can be booked starting this spring. Students and families should ensure student Visas are in order if they are planning for a September in class academic year.

New Travel Guidelines for International Travel

With the rising number of COVID-19 variants entering Canada, the government of Canada has instituted new testing and quarantine measures for all passengers  arriving  in  Canada  from  International destinations. In January the Government of Canada announced new rules on international travel. In addition to proof of a negative pre-departure test, Transport Canada will expand the existing international flight restrictions which funnel scheduled international commercial passenger flights into four Canadian airports: Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Calgary International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport.

All travellers arriving to Canada by air, as of February 22, 2021, with some exceptions, will be required to take a COVID-19 molecular test when they arrive in Canada before exiting the airport, and another toward the end of their 14-day quarantine period. With limited exceptions, air travellers, will also be required to reserve, prior to departure to Canada, a 3-night stay in a government- authorized hotel. A list of authorized hotels Travellers will be able to book is available on the Government of Canada website. The cost of the hotel is the responsibility of the traveller.

自2021年2月22日起，所有乘飞机抵达加拿大的旅客(部分例外)在抵达加拿大后离开机场前，以及在14天隔离期结束前，都需要接受COVID-19分子检测。除少数例外情况外，航空旅客也将被要求在出发前往加拿大之前预订在政府授权的酒店住3晚。加拿大政府网站上有旅行者可以预订的授权酒店列表。酒店住宿的费用由旅游者自己承担。

It is unclear how long this new requirement will be in place but international students should prepare for this new expectation.
