选课
Advice on Course Selection
Students always ponder what to choose when it comes to course selection. Grade 9 and 10 students have very limited course choice because of the 18 compulsory credits in the Canadian system. Once you have completed your grade 9 and 10 compulsory courses, you will have more choices.
As a guidance counsellor, I always begin by reviewing the interests and academic strengths with my student. For example: “What do you like to study?” “What are you good at studying?”, “What do you plan to do after school?” In the Canadian school system, we talk about “pathways”. Pathways are your Education Paths. The basic and best suitable paths for international high school students are College and University. Colleges offer smaller classes mainly for practical or applied learning and the programs are more career-specific. College programs can offer a certificate (1-2years), a diploma (2 years), an advanced diploma (3 years) or a degree (4 years). Universities offer larger classes with independent learning programs. The programs are not necessarily career-specific. You can study an Undergraduate degree (3-4 yrs), a Graduate degree (+1-2yr) or a Doctoral degree (+1-2 yr). Today, many colleges and universities are in partnerships to offer bridging programs leading to both a diploma and a degree.
To choose the right courses that best fit your education path, you should consider both your interest, your strengths and your goal. If you have no ideas about your future study program or career, I usually advise my students to keep grade 12 English, one grade 12 math, 1 or 2 senior Science. Grade 12 English is mandatory for your future College and/or University admission. Thus, you will need to work hard on your English skills. Math opens doors to many post-secondary programs and careers. If you are struggling with math, you may look for advice from your school guidance counsellor to move to a different stream. The Science course can keep your door open to most Science, Health Care and Engineering programs. Most business programs require one a grade 12 English and a senior math credit. In this case, you have more room for your electives. It is never too early to investigate your education paths. MyBlueprint is an excellent academic and career cruising tool for you to begin with. You can also find the Program information from Ontariocolleges.ca and Ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca. These are some of the good places for you to do your research and begin your education planning.
你也可以从Ontariocolleges.ca (https://www.ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca/)和 Ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca (https://www.ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca/)查询详细的项目信息。
